Palate in Paradise

George Bernard Shaw once said that there is no love sincerer than the love for food. A staunch believer in this philosophy myself, I have always associated happiness with generous servings of good food. Luckily, the man I married happens to share the same love for food as me and hence, most of our amorous conversations somehow, fascinatingly, circle around the topic of food. ‘What’s for dinner’, ‘which restaurant are we exploring this weekend’ and ‘is there leftover biriyani for breakfast today’, are some of the frequently asked questions in the house. In this set up, selecting a place for a romantic date on our 2 nd wedding Anniversary, was a real challenge. Last year, for our 1 st Anniversary, we had found our date in a very posh restaurant in Lower Parel, Mumbai. That evening, amidst the frenzy of celebrations, we ended up consuming a bottle of champagne each. Needless to say, we not only spent a bomb on dinner, but also remembered little from the supposedly beautiful night....

The Time Traveller

This one, I write, as a season special, because of the many signs I received over the last few weeks, making it absolutely impossible to not pen down my thoughts. It all began when I happened to watch a movie called ‘About Time’, which was being aired on television sometime back. The movie, very simply, narrates the story of a man, ordinary, like you and I, with an incredible power to travel in time. While he is still human and does not use this power to revolutionise or change the world, he does bring his powers into play to enjoy the more poignant nuances of life. In other words, he exploits his power over time to re-live some of the moments he has already experienced - be it living a mundane day all over again, making minor corrections that may have important life-changing repercussions, or spending a day with this late father on the beach, back in time, just like the olden days. I learnt that it is extremely easy for each one of us, to take each day for granted. We are angered ea...

A Meaningless Job

I have been doing a meaningless job Sometimes I laugh, sometimes I sob Sometimes I kill time, by doing some puzzles Whatsaspp and facebook, seem to drive away by troubles I dribble away the hours like an MBA snob The papers keep coming, in my meaningless job. I read and I read, but nothing excites me I type out the replies, so boring it surprises me! I wonder if all my degrees and the so called intelligence Really requires me to churn out this work in diligence? I drag myself up and try to make my work less drab Click-clack goes my keyboard, writing a song on my meaningless job. Sometimes on loo breaks, I take a quick nap in the bathroom I engage in small talks to drive away the sleepy gloom Green tea and day dreams aid me to carry on The song playing in my head is by Aerosmith, a song called ‘Dream on’ I stare at the computer screen, trying my best to absorb Because I have to deliver, be it a meaningless job. I fish out my calendar and start...

Happy Birthday to Me!

Well, after fiddling around with the idea of starting my own blog for the longest time ever, I finally found a story worth starting off with. The title is deliberate and significant, for two reasons – first, because it is my debut blog article (Happy birthday to me!) and second, because I found my blog unveiling story on my birthday (Happy birthday to me!). So without further ado, here goes: When my sister and I were little girls, we always made a big deal out of birthdays. Birthdays then, were all about wearing new clothes, getting a plethora of gifts, being surrounded by friends and family from all corners of the city, gorging on delicious biryani from that favourite food joint, cutting at least 2 cakes, one of which will be smeared all across the face and being pampered throughout the day. It was all about feeling like a princess for at least that one day and having the time of our lives. However, as we grow up and move to different cities, we realise that birthdays, may be,...
